THE SECRETARY-GENERAL’S MESSAGE ON THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID 19), 13 March 2020

Dear friends,

The upheaval caused by the coronavirus – COVID 19 — is all around us.

And I know many are anxious, worried and confused. That’s absolutely natural.

We are facing a health threat unlike any other in our lifetimes.

Meanwhile, the virus is spreading … the danger is growing … and our health systems, economies and day-to-day lives are being severely tested.

The most vulnerable are the most affected — particularly our elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions … those without access to reliable health care … and those in poverty or living on the edge. Continue reading

Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Sudan, 9 March 2020

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack today in Khartoum on the convoy of the Prime Minister of the Sudan, H.E. Abdalla Hamdok.

The Secretary-General reiterates that such attacks are unacceptable and calls for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

The Secretary-General reaffirms the solidarity and unwavering support of the United Nations to the Sudan.

         لقد أُحرز تقدم كبير في إعمال حقوق المرأة في العقود الأخيرة، وشمل ذلك إلغاء قوانين التمييز ضدها وازدياد أعداد الفتيات الملتحقات بالمدارس. ولكننا نواجه الآن ردة فعل قوية مناوئة لذلك التقدم. ففي بعض البلدان يجري إضعاف تدابير الحماية القانونية من الاغتصاب والإيذاء داخل الإطار العائلي؛ وغدت الحقوق الجنسية والإنجابية للمرأة معرضة للخطر. The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Abdalla Hamdok, Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan in the margins of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister discussed Sudan’s on going political transition, the peace process and the transition from peacekeeping to peacebuilding in Darfur. The Secretary-General commended Prime Minister Hamdok for the ongoing reform efforts and pledged the United Nations’ full support to Sudan.

المهاجرون جزء لا يتجزأ من أفراد المجتمع، إذ يساهمون في التفاهم والتنمية المستدامة في مجتمعاتهم المحلية وفي المجتمعات التي تستقبلهم.

         ومن مصلحة الجميع أن تكون الهجرة آمنة ومنظمة ونظامية. والتعاون الدولي هو خير ما تتحقق به الأولويات الوطنية في مجال الهجرة.

         ومن حق جميع المهاجرين أن يتمتعوا على قدم المساواة مع غيرهم بحماية جميع حقوق الإنسان المكفولة لهم.

Safe, orderly and regular migration is in the interest of all. And national priorities on migration are best achieved through international cooperation.

رسالة الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة بمناسبة اليوم الدولي للتغطية الصحية الشاملة، 12 كانون الأول/ديسمبر 2019

         في أيلول/سبتمبر الماضي، أيّد قادة العالم المجتمعون في الأمم المتحدة إعلانا سياسيا طموحا بشأن التغطية الصحية الشاملة، مؤكدين من جديد أن الصحة حق من حقوق الإنسان. ويشكّل الإعلان إنجازا هاما من شأنه أن يدفع عجلة التقدم المحرز خلال العقد المقبل على صعيد خطة التنمية المستدامة لعام 2030.

         وبمناسبة هذا اليوم الدولي للتغطية الصحية الشاملة، أدعو القادة إلى الوفاء بالوعد، وكفالة أن يتحقق توفير الصحة للجميع كواقع لجميع الناس في كل مكان. Continue reading

This past September at the United Nations, world leaders endorsed an ambitious political declaration on universal health coverage, reaffirming that health is a human right. The agreement is a significant achievement that will drive progress over the next decade on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. On this International Universal Health Coverage Day, I call on leaders to keep the promise and ensure health for all is a reality for everyone, everywhere. Continue reading

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL’S MESSAGE ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF COMMEMORATION AND DIGNITY OF THE VICTIMS OF THE CRIME OF GENOCIDE, 9 December 2019

On this day we remember and pay tribute to the victims of the horrendous crime of genocide. We also reflect on what more we can do to uphold the responsibilities set out in the Genocide Convention.

Too often, the world has failed the populations under threat of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and ethnic cleansing. The examples are many, and we know them well, but they remain a scourge, even today, causing great suffering. And the devastating impact on the victims, communities and society as a whole can take generations to overcome and heal. Continue reading
